A Long-term Research Project
Project Statement
Gathering Color from the Land is an ongoing long-term research project exploring the relationships between earth, plants, minerals, and color through the landscapes of Northern California and rural Japan.
Rather than beginning with commercially produced pigments or dyes, the project starts with the materials already present in each landscape. Clay, minerals, leaves, bark, flowers, fruits, and roots each carry traces of place, season, climate, and time.
By collecting plants, extracting color, observing natural processes, and documenting each discovery, the project seeks to understand color not simply as a visual phenomenon, but as an expression of the living relationships between land, ecology, and human experience.
Each color becomes a record of the place from which it came.
Through this ongoing practice, Gathering Color from the Land explores how the materials of the Earth continue to shape both our environment and ourselves.
Ultimately, Gathering Color from the Land is an exploration of the Earth—not as an abstract idea, but as the place where I live and exist today.
「土地から色を集める（Gathering Color from the Land）」は、北カリフォルニアと日本の里山を舞台に、土、植物、鉱物、そして色のつながりを探る長期的なリサーチプロジェクトです。
市販の顔料や染料を出発点とするのではなく、その土地にすでに存在している素材に目を向けます。土、鉱物、葉、樹皮、花、果実、根。それぞれは、その土地の季節や気候、時間の積み重なりを映し出しています。
植物を採集し、色を抽出し、自然の変化を観察し、記録を重ねることで、色を単なる視覚的な現象ではなく、土地と生態系、そして人との関係性を映し出す存在として捉えています。
一つひとつの色は、その土地の記録です。
この継続的な実践を通して、「Gathering Color from the Land」は、地球の素材が今もなお私たちの環境と暮らしを形づくっていることを探究しています。
私の関心は、「地球」という存在そのものにあります。
遠い概念としてではなく、今、私が立ち、暮らし、生きている場所としての地球です。
足元の土、身近に育つ植物、石に眠る鉱物、そしてそこから現れる色。それらはすべて、一つの生命の循環の中にあります。
このリサーチは、その循環に耳を澄ませ、地球が語る物語を少しずつ受け取っていくための実践です。
Why This Research?
For many years, my curiosity has been drawn to the Earth—not as an abstract idea, but as the place where I exist today.
Through many years of working with ceramics and presenting ceramic artworks, I came to see clay not simply as a material, but as something that carries the memory of the Earth itself.
Over time, my curiosity expanded to the minerals found within the earth—iron, limestone, ash, and other natural elements used in ceramic glazes. During firing, these materials transform in unexpected ways, revealing colors and surfaces shaped through natural processes rather than complete human control.
At the same time, my interest extended to food and the plants that sustain our lives. Like clay and minerals, plants emerge from the earth, shaped by the soil, water, climate, and seasons of the places where they grow.
From this understanding grew a new question:
What colors are already present in the landscapes around us?
Gathering color from plants became a natural continuation of my exploration of earth materials. Every color carries traces of the land that produced it, reflecting the relationships between soil, minerals, plants, climate, and time.
This project explores these connections through the practice of collecting, dyeing, observing, and documenting. Rather than seeking to control nature, it is an ongoing process of learning from it.
I see this research as part of a larger cycle:
Earth nourishes plants. Plants nourish people. And plants return to us once again as color.
Gathering Color from the Land is an ongoing exploration of that cycle, viewed through the language of color.
私の関心は、長年にわたり地球そのものに向けられてきました。
それは遠い概念としての地球ではなく、今、私が立ち、暮らし、生きている場所としての地球です。
長年、陶芸と向き合う中で、私は土を単なる素材ではなく、地球の記憶を宿す存在として感じるようになりました。
やがて興味は、釉薬に用いられる鉄や石灰、灰など、地球を構成するさまざまな鉱物へと広がっていきました。焼成の過程では、それらの素材が人の意図を超えた変化を見せ、自然の働きによって色や表情が生まれます。
同時に、私の関心は「食」へと向かい、私たちの命を支える植物へと広がりました。植物もまた、土、水、気候、季節によって育まれ、その土地の環境を映し出しています。
そうした探究の中で、一つの問いが生まれました。
「私たちの身のまわりには、どのような色がすでに存在しているのだろう。」
植物から色を集めることは、地球の素材への探究をごく自然に延長したものでした。
一つひとつの色には、その土地の土壌や鉱物、植物、気候、そして時間の痕跡が刻まれています。
このプロジェクトでは、植物を採集し、色を抽出し、観察し、記録することを通して、それらのつながりを探っています。自然を思い通りにコントロールするのではなく、自然から学び続けることが、このリサーチの中心にあります。
私は、この研究を大きな循環の一部として捉えています。
土は植物を育み、植物は人を育み、そして植物は再び色となって私たちのもとへ還ってきます。
「Gathering Color from the Land」は、その循環を「色」という言葉を通して見つめ続ける、終わりのない探究です。

Harvest Brodiaea produced a brilliant lemon-yellow that surprised me. Although the flowers appeared purple, the dye bath revealed an entirely different color hidden within the plant.
Harvest Brodiaeaは、思いがけず鮮やかなレモンイエローをもたらしました。紫色の花の姿からは想像もできない、植物の内側に秘められたもうひとつの色が、染液の中で静かに姿を現したのです。
