VANS sneaker

This work is composed of six used Vans AUTHENTIC sneakers in the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The artist disassembled each shoe, carefully untied the fabric components, and reconnected them by hand, reconstructing them into a new form.
On the heel of each Vans sneaker is a red patch bearing the phrase “OFF THE WALL.” This expression, meaning “unconventional” or “out of the ordinary,” is said to have originated in the 1970s, when professional skateboarders who wore Vans would shout it in admiration of a fellow skater’s difficult trick. The AUTHENTIC model, originally produced through custom orders in the early days of the company, remains one of its most iconic and enduring designs—embodying, in its origins, the very spirit of being “off the wall.”
The phrase can be understood as a celebration of nonconformity, while at the same time carrying a sense of irony in that it appears on what has become a highly standardized and widely recognized sneaker.
The six colors used in the work correspond to those of the rainbow. The worn sneakers are reconfigured to extend from the ground toward the sky, evoking the form of a rainbow. In recent years, the rainbow has become widely associated with the LGBTQ community through the rainbow flag. However, around 30 years ago in Japan, such an association was not yet common. Considering that the first rainbow flag was created in San Francisco in 1978, it can be said that the rainbow did not originally carry this social meaning.
The association we now make between the rainbow and LGBTQ identities reflects decades of social movements that have successfully generated visibility, meaning, and rights. While this transformation is worthy of recognition, it also raises the question of ownership. A rainbow, after all, is merely a natural phenomenon—the refraction of sunlight through rain—and inherently without fixed meaning. Its beauty appears suddenly in the sky and remains vividly in memory, belonging to no one.
Perhaps, when a society emerges in which all people are accepted, the rainbow may once again return to everyone.
This work was created during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the artist was in residence at the gallery, producing and exhibiting on site.

本作は、赤・橙・黄・緑・青・紫の6色の VANS「AUTHENTIC」モデルの中古スニーカーを用いて制作された作品である。作家はスニーカーを一度解体し、布のパーツを一本ずつほどいて結び直し、再び連結することで、新たなかたちへと再構成している。
VANSのスニーカーの踵には「OFF THE WALL」と記された赤いパッチが付されている。この言葉は「型破りな」「常識にとらわれない」といった意味を持ち、1970年代にVANSを愛用していたプロスケーターたちが、仲間の高度なトリックに対して発した称賛の言葉に由来するとされる。創業初期にカスタムオーダーによって生産されていた「AUTHENTIC」は、現在に至るまでブランドを象徴する定番モデルであり、その成り立ち自体が「OFF THE WALL」の精神を体現しているとも言える。
このスローガンは、既成の枠から逸脱することへの賛美であると同時に、極めて普遍的なスニーカーに刻まれているという点において、ある種の皮肉としても読み取ることができる。
作品に用いられている6色は虹の色であり、履き古されたスニーカーは地上から空へと伸びる虹のように再構成されている。近年では、虹はLGBTQを象徴するレインボーフラッグを想起させるものとして広く認識されているが、日本においては約30年前、この連想は一般的なものではなかった。1978年にサンフランシスコで最初のレインボーフラッグが制作されたことを踏まえれば、それ以前において虹は現在のような社会的意味を帯びてはいなかったと言えるだろう。
虹に新たな意味を与えてきた社会運動の積み重ねは、確かに重要な成果である。一方で、虹とは本来、太陽光が雨粒に反射して現れる自然現象に過ぎず、固有の意味を持つものではない。その美しさは誰の所有物でもなく、ただ記憶の中に強く刻まれるものである。
すべての人が受け入れられる社会が実現するとき、虹は再び、すべての人に開かれたものとして立ち現れるのかもしれない。
本作は、コロナ禍において作家がレジデンスアーティストとして滞在制作および展示を行った際に制作された。
