About the Exhibition

Colors and forms born from encounters between plants and place.

Gathering Color from the Land is an ongoing project that moves between three places — Akiota Hiroshima,

Los Angeles, and Northern California — gathering and documenting colors from plants and natural materials found in each place.

In this exhibition, Ayaka Umeda and Minako Mizuno explore, through their respective practices, the relationship between plants, light, the human hand, and the land.

Ayaka Umeda presents works created through rōketsu-zome (wax-resist dyeing), inspired by plants and their forms. Minako Mizuno continues her exploration of colors gathered from plants and natural materials, including those found in Akiota, Los Angeles, and Northern California, through plant dyeing, cyanotype, photographs, and field notes.

Different techniques, different places.

By observing plants closely and finding individual ways to preserve their forms and colors, the exhibition explores new ways of connecting with the land.

Gathering Color from the Land
