宮本ルリ子《さわる手の物語》は、触覚を通して言語、記憶、そして身体感覚の交差点を探る作品群です。
2021年、国立民族学博物館での特別展「ユニバーサル・ミュージアム−さわる！“触”の大博覧会」では、点字を取り入れた《思考する手から感じる手へ、そして…》を発表しました。その経験を基盤に、点字が持つ「言語としての機能」と「触覚を通して直接心身に訴えかける力」という二重の性質をさらに探求しています。
本展では、点字と本の形態を結びつけた作品を通じて、見える形と見えない情報が共存する世界を体感できます。来場者が手で触れることで作品は完成し、静けさの中に潜む温もりや記憶が呼び覚まされます。また、会期中には来場者の手を撮影し、希望者のメッセージとともにZINEとしてまとめ、参加者の痕跡を作品の物語に刻みます。
本展は、手が感じ、覚え、そして考えるという詩的なプロセスを体験するインスタレーションです。
Ruriko Miyamoto, A Tale of the Touching Hands explores the intersection of language, memory, and bodily perception through the sense of touch.
In 2021, at the National Museum of Ethnology, Miyamoto presented From the Hands of Thought to the Hands of Senses, and then..., a work incorporating Braille for the special exhibition Universal Museum: Exploring the New Field of Tactile Sensation. Building on that experience, she has deepened her inquiry into the dual nature of Braille—both as a linguistic system and as a tactile medium that directly engages the body and mind.
In this exhibition, works that link the imagery of Braille with the form of books invite visitors to experience the coexistence of visible forms and invisible information. The pieces are completed through touch, awakening warmth and memory hidden within silence. During the exhibition, visitors’ hands will be photographed and, together with their written messages, compiled into a ZINE, leaving tangible traces of their participation as part of the unfolding narrative.
This exhibition is an installation that invites audiences into a poetic journey where the hand feels, remembers, and thinks.
Artist Statement / Ruriko Miyamoto アーティスト ステートメント
今から１５年ほど前、私は『誰でもが楽しめるミュージアム』を目指す『ユニバーサルミュージアム研究会』に参加する機会を得ました。その活動の中で、視覚障害者のある方々と親しく接するようになりました。とりわけ感銘を受けたのは、皆さんが手で文字をすらすら読み取っている姿です。
ご存知の通り、点字は視覚を使わず、指先で直接触れて読むものです。この「さわる」という行為によって得られる情報は、単なる文字情報にとどまらず、頭で「理解する」ことを超えて、身体を通して伝わってくる何かがあるように感じられました。それが非常に印象的で、私の関心を強く惹きつけたのだと思います。実際、視覚障害のある方からは「耳で聞くだけでなく、点字を読むことで理解がより深まる」といったお話も伺いました。
「さわる」という行為は、対象と物理的に密着することで繋がりを生み出します。そして、そのつながりの中から、より深い理解が芽生えるのではないかと思うのです。言語としての機能を持ちながら、同時に聴覚という身体感覚に直接訴える点字を、私は一つの作品の中に取り入れたいと考えるようになりました。
本展では、展示が生み出す言葉の「音」と「造形イメージ」とを結びつけた作品を制作しました。また、鑑賞者の方々が実際に触れることで完成する仕掛けも取り入れています。さわるという体験を通じて、身体に直接訴えかける豊かな感覚の世界を味わっていただければ幸いです。
About fifteen years ago, I had the opportunity to join the Universal Museum Study Group, an initiative aiming to create museums that everyone can enjoy. Through this activity, I came into close contact with people who are visually impaired.
What impressed me most was the way they effortlessly read written language through touch. As you know, Braille is read not with the eyes, but by directly touching the raised dots with one’s fingertips. The information gained through this act of “touching” goes beyond the mere recognition of characters — it seems to convey something that surpasses intellectual understanding, something that resonates through the body itself.
I was deeply moved by this experience and found myself increasingly drawn to it. Some people told me that reading Braille allows them to understand things more profoundly than simply listening to spoken words. The act of touching brings one into direct physical contact with the object, creating a tangible sense of connection. From within that connection, I believe, a deeper form of understanding can emerge.
Braille, as a language system that simultaneously appeals to the bodily sense of hearing, inspired me to incorporate it into my artistic practice.
For this exhibition, I created works that intertwine the “sound” of language with visual form — artworks that are completed only when touched by the viewer. I hope that through this tactile experience, visitors will encounter a world of rich sensations that speak directly to the body.

Participatory workshop (interactive, hands-on)
During the exhibition, visitors were invited to leave a trace of their hand. Your hand was photographed and accompanied it with a short message.
These contributions will later be compiled into a ZINE documenting the exhibition, which will be available to those who requested a copy.
