COVID-19 (2020)
2019年に新型コロナウィルスが発生して、私たちの生活は大きく変化しました。その変化のひとつにマスクがあります。2020年の春、新型コロナウィルスが流行し始めた頃、マスクは店頭から消えて私たちはしばらく買うことができませんでした。日本では、不織布のマスクは輸入に頼っていた為、輸入元が輸出を制限するとたちまち全国的に欠品の状態へと陥ったのです。しかし現在は、不織布のマスクだけでなく多くの商品が海外で生産されて国内に輸入されています。新型コロナウィルスの影響でマスクが品薄になったこの出来事は、多くの商品の生産を海外に頼る現代のグローバリズムを象徴した出来事といってもよいでしょう。
そして不織布のマスクの品薄を受けて、多くの人が布マスクを手作りしました。私自身もマスクを手作りしたり、マスクに関する報道を見るうちに、手作りのマスクには感染防止という目的の他に、コロナにかかりませんように といった祈りや願いが込められていると私は感じました。
この作品は、布マスクを作り繋ぎ合わせたものです。マスク一枚一枚はひとりひとりの人の比喩でもあります。1段目は1枚、2段目は2枚、3段目は4枚というように下にいくほど枚数が急激に増えています。それは、人との繋がりにより急速に感染が広がる新型コロナウィルスを表します。その一方で、複数のマスクが天井から吊るされている形は千羽づるを想起させます。それは新型コロナウィルスの終息を願う祈りの形でもあります。 (text by Kaoru Hirano)
The coronavirus pandemic started in 2019, our lives had changed dynamically and the mask is one of them. In the spring of 2020, when the new coronavirus began to spread, masks disappeared from stores and we could not buy them for a while. In Japan, non-woven masks were imported, so when the importer restricted exports, we were stand in a state of immediate nationwide shortage. Nowadays, not only non-woven masks but also many other products are manufactured overseas and imported into Japan. The shortage of masks due to the new coronavirus can be said to be a symbol of modern globalism, which relies on overseas production for many products.
In response to the shortage of non-woven masks, many people made cloth masks by hand same as me. Watching news reports about masks, I realized handmade masks also contain prayers and wishes of people not only the purpose of preventing infection.
The artwork titled called “COVID-19” is made by cloth masks which I made during the pandemic. They are joined together, each mask represents one person. One mask on the first row, two on the second, four on the third, etc. looking down, the number of masks increases rapidly same as a pandemic. On the other hand, the shape of multiple masks hanging from the ceiling reminds me of a thousand paper cranes. “COVID-19” is a form of prayer for the end of the pandemic. (text by Kaoru Hirano)
memento mori -grandmother- (2020)
2018年に祖母が96歳で亡くなり、古い写真や服が遺品として遺されました。肌色の糸状のものは、祖母が着ていた肌着を糸へと解体した作品です。祖母が火葬場で焼かれて骨になった姿からインスピレーションを得て制作しました。肌着についているタグには ひらの と書かれています。晩年、祖母は施設に入っていた為、それが彼女のものであることがわかるように、多くの持ち物に記名されていました。祖母がいなくなった今、この ひらの の文字が祖母がこの肌着を着ていたこと、または祖母が存在していたことの証のようでもあります。
そして、この肌着の作品の背後の壁面にみえる 眼鏡、鏡、写真、パスポート、大東亜戦争割引国庫債券、傷痍軍人手帳、日章旗なども祖母の遺品です。その中には戦争にまつわるものが多く入っています。生前、祖母から戦争の話を聞いたことはあまりありませんでしたが、おそらく祖母は、あえてそれらを残すことで、私たちに戦争の体験を伝えたかったのでしょう。
壁面の左側に祖母、右側に祖父、中央に父の写真が貼られています。特定の人物の時代の違う写真が不規則に貼られていることから、この壁の前に立つ時、ひとりの人の人生を圧縮したような時間の歪みが生じているようにも感じます。
そして、祖母の肌着を素材とした作品と、それ以外の写真等を組み合わせることで、遺品が持つ気配はより強くなり、そこには今は亡き故人の亡霊が立ち現れているようです。 (text by Kaoru Hirano)
My grandmother passed away in 2018 at the age of 96, leaving behind old photos and clothes as her belongings. The skin-colored thread-like objects are pieces of my grandmother's underwear that I deconstructed into thread. I was inspired to create this piece by my grandmother's bones after she was burned at the crematorium. The tag on the underwear reads “Hirano". In her later years, my grandmother was in a nursing home, so many of her belongings were inscribed with her name so that people would know that those are belonged to her. Now that my grandmother is no longer with us, the Hirano letters seem to be a proof of her life, that she wore these underwear, or that she existed.
The glasses, mirror, photographs, passport, treasury bonds for the Greater East Asia War, wounded soldier's notebook, and Japanese flag that can be seen on the wall behind this underwear piece are also my grandmother's belongings. Many of them are related to the war. My grandmother did not talk much about the war when she was alive, but she probably wanted to share her war experience with us by leaving these things behind.
On the left side of the wall are photos of my grandmother, on the right side are photos of my grandfather, and in the center are photos of my father. When you stand in front of this wall, you can feel time distortion that seems to compress one person's life by the photos placed irregularly of different periods of a particular person.
By combining the piece made from my grandmother's underwear and the other photographs, the aura of her mementos became stronger, and it seems that my late grandmother is now appearing there. (text by Kaoru Hirano)

これは、赤・橙・黄・緑・青・紫の６色のVANSのAUTHENTICモデルの中古のスニーカーです。スニーカーを分解して、布の部分を一本づつほどいて結び直して繋いでいます。
VANSのスニーカーの踵には、VANS "OFF THE WALL" の赤いパッチがついています。"OFF THE WALL"は「突拍子もない、型破りな、普通じゃない」というような意味があります。1970年代にVANSを愛用していたプロスケーターたちが、仲間が難易度の高い技を決めた時に"OFF THE WALL" と叫んでいたことが由来のひとつとされているようです。そして、AUTHENTICはカスタムオーダーで創業したVANSの初期モデルのスニーカーで、現在も定番として愛用者が多いモデルです。カスタムオーダーという生産方法を取っていたAUTHENTICモデルこそ、普通じゃない "OFF THE WALL"が一番似合うモデルだと言っている愛用者もいます。
VANS の "OFF THE WALL" は、普通ではないことへの 賞賛、そして普通であるな というメッセージ またはそれが超定番のスニーカーのパッチに記されているということを考えれば 皮肉 と捉えることもできるでしょう。
そして、この赤・橙・黄・緑・青・紫の６色は虹の色です。履き古されたスニーカーが虹のように地から天へ伸びています。近年のLGBTQなどの社会運動の興隆から、虹というとレインボーフラッグを連想する方も多いでしょう。しかし、およそ30年前の日本では、虹からLGBTQについて連想する方はまだ多くありませんでした。そして最初のレインボーフラッグが1978年にサンフランシスコで制作されたことを考えると、それ以前には虹はそのような意味を持っていなかったと言ってよいでしょう。今私たちが虹からLGBTQを連想することは、これまでの40年以上のその運動により、社会的な意味や権利を獲得してきたすばらしい成果であると言ってよいでしょう。虹は太陽の光が雨に反射しておこる現象に過ぎず、本来は何の意味も持ってはいないのですから。
虹に新しい意味を与えたという社会現象を賞賛する気持ちがある一方で、しかし虹は誰のものなのだろうという疑問も残ります。青い空に突如として現れる虹はとても美しく、その光は記憶の中に鮮明に残ります。それは誰のものでもなかったはずです。すべての人が受け入れられる社会が実現する時、虹はすべての人のところに戻ってくるのかもしれません。

These are used Vans AUTHENTIC model sneakers in six colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. I disassembled the sneakers and untied and retied the fabric pieces one by one to connect them.
The Vans sneakers have a red patch on the heel that says Vans "OFF THE WALL”. It means "unpredictable, unconventional, unusual", and is said to have originated from the 1970s when professional skaters who loved Vans would shout "OFF THE WALL" when a fellow skater performed a difficult move. The AUTHENTIC is one of the first models of Vans sneakers to be produced by custom order, and it is still one of the most popular models. The AUTHENTIC is the first model of Vans sneakers that was established by custom order.
Vans' "OFF THE WALL" can be seen as an admiration for the unusual, and a message to not be ordinary, or it can be seen as ironic, considering that it is written on the patch of a very classic sneaker.
The six colors are the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Worn-out sneakers extend from the earth to the sky like a rainbow. With the rise of LGBTQ and other social movements in recent years, many people may associate the rainbow with the rainbow flag. However, about 30 years ago, not many people associated the rainbow with LGBTQ issues in Japan. And when you consider that the first rainbow flag was created in San Francisco in 1978, probably the rainbow didn't have that kind of meaning before then. The fact that we now associate the rainbow with LGBTQ people is a wonderful result of the social meaning and rights that have been developed by the movement over the past 40 years. While I admire the social phenomenon that has given a new meaning to the rainbow, but I am wondering who owns the rainbow. The rainbow is just the reflection of the sun's rays on the rain, and it doesn't really have any meaning. The sudden appearance of a rainbow in a blue sky is so beautiful. Its light remains clearly in our memory. It did not belong to anyone.
The rainbow may come back to everyone when we achieve a society that everyone is accepted. (text by Kaoru Hirano)
