artist statement
In Japan, people often build Yakushi Rurikō Nyorai (Bhaisajyaguru) to pray for recovery from illness. Therefore, this statue sometimes holds a medicine pot. In this piece, I put soil from Kauai and Shikoku together in the pot. I wanted to respect and symbolize the strong ties and history of the people of both places. I believe that these are global ties that transcend country.
As of 2020, COVID -19 broke the close relationship people-to-people, and country-to-country. However, the infectious disease that spread all over the world showed that the Earth is one ship, and that all people have the same wish. It was also an event that made us aware of our deep unity. This Yakushi Rurikō Nyorai, with its medicine pot, points to oneness = love.

薬師瑠璃光如来は医王如来とも呼ばれています。この世の全ての人の心と身体の健康を願い、病気を癒やして下さる佛様といわれています。そのため、薬壺を持っている像があります。この作品では、ハワイのカウアイと四国からの土を薬壺に入れました。私は両国の人々の強い絆と歴史を尊重し、国を超えたグローバルな絆をこの薬壺に象徴しました。
2020年、COVID -19は人と人、国と国の密接な関係を絶ってしまいました。しかし、世界中に広がった伝染病は、地球が一つの船であり、すべての人が同じ願いを持っていることも示しました。この薬師瑠璃光如来の薬壺は、一体=愛を表しているのです。
